The American Women Quarters Program

Since February 2025, we have been displaying the American Women Quarters Program, a series (2022–2025) honoring 20 remarkable women who shaped U.S. history and culture. Each quarter highlights achievements across fields such as civil rights, science, government, and the arts, with many honorees representing historically underrecognized communities.

Background

The American Women Quarters Program celebrates trailblazing women who shaped U.S. history. Launched by the United States Mint to mark 100 years since the Nineteenth Amendment, the program runs from 2022 through 2025 and features five new designs each year, twenty in total. Each quarter highlights a woman recognized for her impact in areas such as suffrage, civil rights, government, science, the arts, and more. Many honorees represent historically underrecognized ethnic minority groups.

The reverse of each coin features the honored woman, while the obverse carries a new portrait of George Washington. The program was authorized by the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, championed by Representatives Barbara Lee and Anthony Gonzalez. Originally envisioned as 56 quarters — one for every U.S. state and territory — the series was shortened to make way for the Semiquincentennial coin program in 2026, which will also include a quarter honoring a woman.
